Community Cohesion

Community cohesion is an integral part of our learning at BHJS. We think about our role in the school community, the local community, our national identity and how this fits into the global community. We learn about the differences in our environment and learn about and from the variety of cultures in the area around us.

Each year group has a project to work towards:

Year 3 – link with Badminton Gardens Elderly Persons Home. The children share their learning and learn from the residents about lost skills or the differences between being a child today and when they were growing up.

Year 4 – link with another school.  Children have the opportunity to communicate with other children from a contrasting environment, share learning and understand the world around them.

Year 5 – project with Avon and Somerset Black Police Association. In year 5, the children have the opportunity to work with officers from Avon and Somerset police, discuss preconceptions and prejudices and learn about the different cultures living in Bristol. We also visit a mosque and sikh temple with the officers to build on the learning in our RE lessons and try some of the different foods at the Asian Day Centre.

Year 6 – Children gain a broader knowledge of different skills and opportunities available to them for future life within the community. Through workshops with local business and various professions, children have the opportunity to begin considering what choices may be available to them for the future and even try out their skills at business with a mini enterprise.
