Home Learning

As a school, we believe strongly that homework is an opportunity to reinforce and practise key skills – building confidence and strengthening learning opportunities for our learners. We have two elements: weekly practice of key skills (Reading, spelling and mental arithmetic) and termly project based, creative activities.

What is homework set and what is expected?

*Year 6 may have additional home learning at points in the year to secure their learning across key stage 2 and prepare them for secondary school expectations.

How will it be recorded?

Spellings/Phonics – spellings are set for the term on Google Classroom based on specific spelling patterns.
Children need to practise these spellings at home and will be tested on them in school the following Friday. Spelling rehearsal does not need to be recorded in any particular way at home, instead we encourage children to practise using a look, say, analyse, cover, write, check approach; the spelling shed is also an excellent resource to support and the password can be found in your child’s reading record. You will receive a reminder to practise through your Google Account each week as well.

Reading – the adult should record each time they read (book title, page references) in the home reading record. Children’s reading records will be checked at least once a fortnight by an adult in school when we hear them read. We ask that all children read with an adult at home at least 5 times per week but, of course, any additional reads throughout the week are always welcomed! Children are encouraged to tell their class teacher when they have finished their book in order to exchange it for new material which is appropriately challenging. Please note that their reading records are not intended for any messages and so ask that you contact your class teacher via the school office or through email should you need to contact them about home learning.

Times Tables Rock Stars – please sign- in to TTRockstars and complete weekly rehearsal throughout the week – the password can be found in your child’s reading record. We encourage all children to practice a little

How do I login to Google Classroom?

There are some changes to the login for Google Classroom following the ransomware attack and changes to IT in the summer. Please find attached a login guide provided by South Gloucestershire.

Children will need 3 pieces of information to hand from their reading diary: (1) their unique username, (2) their school username and (3) their password – first three letters of their name. Please note that the passwords should not be changed as they link to the school IT systems. Any problems with passwords will need to be reported to the class teacher in the first instance.

How do I join my class?

The first time your child logins, they will be asked to enter ‘class code’ to join their new class. These are as follows:
Y3 Angelfish: mmwjcux
Y3 Archerfish: vtv7eg6
Y4 Orca: bgv4bcl
Y4 Puffers: gnghrak
Y5 Swordfish: qsaewd4
Y5 Stingrays: dbw3d5m
Y6 Tetras: rnbanuu
Y6 Tigerfish: 2ewjhvm

Online Safety

Once your child has logged in, it would be a good opportunity to open up a conversation about online safety and online behaviours at home. Topics that are explored through our online safety curriculum throughout the year include:

• Internet safety • Privacy and security • Relationships and communication • Cyberbullying • Information literacy • Self-image and identity • Digital footprint and reputation • Creative credit and copyright

Further information about online safety and some really useful links can be found on the school website at here.
If you have any problems with logging in, please don’t hesitate to contact your class teacher via school@bhjs.org.uk
